Insuring Your Business Equipment

It is important to let your home and car insurance company know that you are operating a business. This is important even if the business is a hobby. Many policies require a rider to cover business equipment.

Travelling with a laptop, or taking a computer to the technician can result in a serious business set back if the laptop or computer is damaged or stolen. I was hit this way once. I didn't realize that my laptop was considered business because I was using it to write books - and writing is a business. I lost quite a bit of equipment when the car was stolen - but the equipment that the insurance company called 'for business use' was not covered by either my home or auto insurance.
